You don't have to take the stat and housing off... You can, but the air will work it's way around if you leave the radiator cap off.

take the cap off and jack the front end up in the air. start it up and let it run for 15 minutes or so. the air will go to the highest spot and burp out. easy as pie. and i know you love pie...
