Default starter problem

my starter in my car just went out but it didn't just go out it like broke off the tranny or something it just happened last night and i haven't gotten it home to take a good look at it yet and i was wondering you anyone knew how much it would cost to replace something like that and how hard it is and what other stuff it could have screwed up. i was driving home on the freeway when it went out and it started making the clunking noise and the tranny was kinda shaky. i was talking to someone and they said it may have ruined my pressure plate and something about a starter ring in the tranny or something i don't remember. i was also wondering how much that stuff would cost to replace and how hard it would be to do myself. this is my daily driver and i'm only 18 and don't have a lot of experience with this kind of stuff but i do have some. oh ya the car is a 1988 5.0 manual coupe. any help would be appreciated
