Default headlight switch problem...

I know this has probably been discussed before many times but I could not find anything in a search. It is the well known headlight/fog light switch over heat on a 1992 GT. I know there was a problem with this but did not know which was the problem....?

Is the switch the problem or is the wiring behind the switch the problem? I got new headlight and fog light pigtail wire harness from CJ Pony Parts. I was not sure if this will fix my problem or should I just go ahead and buy the new switch as well?

the problem I notice is that one of the wires heats up really really hot. Then it will turn off the dash lights, tail lights, parking lights. Everything else will work though....it just gets so damn hot if I turn my fog lights on that I can barely touch it so I have to just keep them off.

yeah there was a recall at one time I think someone told me, I just don't remember if it was the switch or the wire harness.

It will ABSOLUTELY happen again, even if you get the new switch.

BTW- I don't believe there ever was a recall. Ford issued a TSB about it, but I don't think they had a recall for the foglight/headlight switch and pigtail problems.

I had this problem, and the ONLY surefire way to prevent it is to go into the dash and rewire the foglight setup yourself (using the stock switches). The Corral has a tech article on this. Here's a link to it: http://www.corral.net/tech/maintenance/foglights.html .

It's pretty easy- I spend 3x longer for everything fixing my car and I did it in about 4 hours without a problem at all, just double checking everything. I have a '93 and it's the exact same as in the instructions.

And I STILL bought a new switch also, just to be safe.

....they did..and the parking brake and the ignition harness...my ford dealer did it all for me...cause this is/was an insurance claim.
