Default Engine light

Heres the deal.....................

engine light has been on since I got the car..........the smog pump is bypassed but I have a feeling that it was not done right. The belt was rerouted and the tube from the pump to the header was cut and soldered shut......

I would bet that was all that was done.....I have been told this will screw some stuff up..........well the guy who built my trans said he could not get a code...and my trans is shifting early and the convertor is engaging early as well.

Can someone help me? I do not want to take it back to however and have them charge me and say I have a computer problem,,,,,,,,

From the symptoms....you may have a faulty TPS, wiring problem, or.....ECM. If you want to check the system.....
- DIY KOEO/KOER Self-Tests and Cylinder Balance Test
and if the above link to m-y-5-o-h.com still doesn’t work, use
- How to run a KOEO, KOER Self-Test codes scan and Cylinder Balance Test instead.

Joel -
I couldn't get the first link to work.
Is it bad or is it just me?

You can also enlist the help of Autozone. They will pull the codes for free.

It is worth it to buy a cheap reader/scanner. There are units available for 30 - 50 bills.
It is a wise investment.

I use mine at every oil change, even if I don't suspect a problem.

You coud have Autozone pull the codes for free, but part of the troubleshooting/checks afterwards, require re-scanning or running the self-tests.

Is it worth the investment?....for a pre-'94 nope...SN95....yes, only if the scanner has the datastream capability....if not, a jumper and the CEL will do. FYI, I have a little over $4k invested in my scanner, but when it comes to troubleshooting a "No codes/No Data" problem, guess what procedure I use.........the jumper/test light method.
