That problem again.
Ok people remember that problem i had with my stang dying on me after about an hour of drivetime. I thought it was an overheating, fuel or electrical problem. Tonite i was ready for it to happen again, on my way home from my friends house late at night i take an extended stroll down the road in my 91 LX. i put her in 3rd and cruise and wait for the symptoms to begin. Since the engine was already warm since i was driving around town with my friend, i knew it would only be a matter of time. Turns out that in 3rd gear when the engine is revved up to about 2500-3000 RPM the engine kicks and tach shows the RPM to spike down real fast then jump back up. As soon as i notice this i pump the gas tp bring her alive, as the RPMs go up to about 3000 the spikes occur. When the spikes occur i hear a loud POP sound coming out the exhaust, maybe once or twice then i will pump the gas to get her going. I used my brain and put her in 4th to lower the RPM going the same speed. This seemed to work, i dont know why but at low RPM the engine seemed to run, but when i hit a certain RPM for EXTENDED periods of time she will die. I wasnt that low on gas and my engine temp was 170. The voltmeter in the car was showing good charge as was my in hand voltmeter when i took readings the day before. It isnt the battery or alternator. No mods were done to the car, oil was just changed and radiator was just flushed, i am CERTAIN this was a pre-existing problem. Please help. Thanks, any reply will help.
170 degrees is too low of an engine temperature for the computer system to work correctly. (it thinks the engine is cold and makes it run richer than it needs to be) I know my '88 runs much better with the stock 190 degree thermostat in it so I would suggest you check the thermostat to make sure you have one and see what temperature it is set to open at and replace it with a hotter one.

where is the ignition module located? and where is the thermostat?

Oh ok cool. I know where the module is, but it looks like its inside the bottom half of the distributor, do i have to take the distrib out to get the module out? How does that work?
Do you still have cats on your exhaust? This kinda sounds like what my car was doing a while back, and it turned out that the junk inside one of my cats had melted and was clogging up that side of my exhaust.
