Anyone with subframe connector experience
I am looking to have my subframe connectors welded in and have a few questions. The car needs to be on the wheels right, not lifted by the frame? If the car is not on a drive-on lift, how imperitive is it to have the car perfectly level on the ground? Is it likely to weld them crooked?
If the car is not sitting as it does on the ground, it could stay in the position it was in while suspended by the frame. The weight is distributed differently when a car is lifted by the frame as opposed to the wheels.
Im also looking to do this. You cant use a normal arm style lift? At my shop we only have one alignment rack, and thats the only way I can see getting my car up in the air with the wheels still supporting the weight.
I did mine on jackstand in my parking spot in my apartment building. I did the welding late at night (1-2 am) and no one complained.
I crawled under the car and mark the floor where the jackstands would be. 2 under rear axle and 1 under each a-arm. I then pulled the car back and placed the jackstands in the marked locations. I then put a level across them and made sure the were level side to side. Front to back does'nt matter as much. I then place plywood under the jacks until it was level. I then pulled the car back in and put it in the jacks in the marked locations with the appropriate amount of wood.
I'm pretty happy with mine and the doors open and closes just as they did before. I also opened and closed them a few timew before doing any welding.
Def. try and get it as level as you can.
What a difference they made.
I wrapped some heavy plastic around the fuel lines while welding. I figured at least that way I would'nt arc directly on them.
