Default Coolant problem

so I got my new engine in and running and I am having a bit of a problem with it over heating. At first it wouldnt hold coolant at all, I filled the radiator up, strarted it and kept it full while it was running. So the thermostat opened and pulled the level down, so I filled it and put the cap on. then the thermostat closed and it would just puke it out the overflow tank until the thermostat opened again, and at this point the radiator was way low. So I put water in it again, and this time took the upper radiator hose off to get that air out of the system. After doing this for a while, it would work fine at idle. I let it sit and cycle open and closed for about 20 mins, took the cap off and everything was still full... took the car out and it over heated(not bad, just higher that normal) came back and the radiator is half empy again. fill it back up and it does fine idling, but take it for a drive and it empys the radiator again, out the overflow I guess because it has no leaks at any hoses or at the pump. Also no smoke out the exhaust and oil is fine.\

any input?

what do you consider "overheating". What temps is it getting up to? What thermo do you have in there?

Sounds like it could be a clogged radiator or bad water pump......

something is pressurizing the hell out of that system. it takes quite a bit of pressure to push antifreeze up the radiator and through the overflow tube, and then all the way up the bottle. sounds like a bad head gasket.

i agree. a blown gasket between the cylinder and a water passage will pressurize the radiator

get a block tester and see if your geting co2 in the coolant system and also do a compression test. If everything looks good jack to front of the vehical up take the cap off fill the radiator cap off fill the the rad and let it run with the cap off and heat on until it over flows out your radiator. You may just have to burp the system. Do u see any white smoke at all when u drive???

what????
He should get a block tester and test for Co2 in the coolant system

Do a compression test

Burp the system with the cap off , the heat on , and jack the front of the car off the ground a few inches

Do you see and white smoke at all ???
