tuning the computer
Ok heres the deal, I have a rebuilt 302 that Im converting to mass air. Im planning on getting 24 injectors and matching mass air. as far as a computer, I think Im going to get a rebuilt one from a parts store for 89-up.
Now, my question is how would you go about tuning this yourself? Do you have to take it to a Dyno place to custom tune it, or can you get one of those handheld chips (like Diablo) and tune it yourself? What would you recommend that is the cheapest solution?

Why dont you just get a computer off ebay or from a junkyard? They are very common I wouldn waste my money buying a new one from a parts store... just my opinion.
Also, have the car tuned by a professional. And if you are curious about tuning your own car read this sticky.

well junkyards always want to sell that with the motor, or they want too much money for it, and ebay ends up costing just as much or more than you can get one rebuilt. Plus, who wants someone's used junk that could be about to quit with my luck lol.. thanks for the link
I have never had a problem JUST getting a computer from a junkyard. If its a problem, bring a tool box or a tool bag and just put the computer in there and walk out [8D] How much is it costing to get a rebuilt one?
I would rather get a puter from the parts store too, ebay computers may have problems, and if you get it from a parts store at least it has a warranty and you can go back and bitch, not right an email hoping to get a response
computer will plug-in play with a MAF "calibrated" for 24's
then you can take it in and they can "fix" the screwed up readings the calibrated MAF is sending the computer.
stock computer is set for 19's
you can get an MAF that will "trick" the computer into using 24's, but its really not right.
you can take into Dyno tuner and they can go in and set the computer for 24's and readjust
your a/f tables to work right.
I'm using my 76mm C&L set for 19's with 24's right now cause I took it in
and had custom tune done, and I'll use same meter for the 36's about to go in.

Funny thing about ECU's, if they work, they work. Getting a used one from someone who will vouch that it works on Ebay shouldnt be a problem. As for tunning there are different levels, here they are in order, (1)Have someone else reprogram your ECU, (2)someone rechip it (3)Use (yourself) a plug in tuner that works with stock ECU (4)piggy back ECU (5)Aftermarket ECU. (6)Dyno tune with #4 or #5
Of course there are some variables that I left out due to the different limitations of stock ECUs. But that is basicly it.
