Default 302 or 331! Rebuild

Hey i have an 89 lx 5.0. The motor needs a good rebuild kit or stroker kit? Which would ya'll do? Should i get a 331 kit for my car or should i get a 302 rebuild kit and a cobra upper and lower intake and gt40 heads? If i get a 331 kit i don't want to spend more than $1000, but if i get the 302 rebuild i can get the upper and lower cobra intake for about $1000.Anyway Which would ya'll think would be better?

rebuild the 302 if ur on that budget because if u get the stroker kit that alone will cost u over a grand and then u got to gove ur block to a machine shop to get it notched for clearinced and machined so thats gonna be even more money..if u were smart u wood just get a good quality shortblock with the 331 in it already but since ur only looking to spend a grand i wood go with upp/lower intake and maybe bigger mass air or injectors

i can get my block done for maybe 100 dollars , i have connections lol my dad owns a trans shop and my bro builds motors, but wee are in fight so can ask him to help , but i can get my dad to get my block balanced and everything at a good price. I figured it would be best to get a good rebuild kit for the 302 for about 350 and get the upper and low intake for about $400 and maybe get some gt40 heads or bigger fuel pump with injectors? I dunno i know i got a best of like 14.60 out of the car and it is an aod so i might just do the rebuild kit and upper and low and get art carr converter?

why dont you get a nice 351w block and stroke it, I think that would be a way better route. Even that 302's are good stroked out too.

??? i dunno i have 1300 to spend, but im gonna rebuild the 302 and get cobra intake, bigger fuel pump, injectors, and maybe put like a 175 shot, and get a cam that is built to run on nitrious, my brother had about the same set up on a 89 gt and it was a 13.30 13.00 car on the motor and he had a cam built and he raced a tubbed s-10 with dual shot on big block and my brother had a dual shot on his 302 and he put a fender on the big block s-10. I will never forget that night lol it was sick both cars looked as if they were going to the moon lol! im gonna look over my options i don't want to throw 1300 in my car and be able to tell no diff? thanks for yalls advice and keep it coming.

to run N02 youll need a forged rebuild kit so in that case get a 331 stroker kit. the block work is cheap and the claeranceing is easy to do with a grinder, but 1300 i snot enougth so you should build it in stages.

I have heard the Cobra intake doesn't flow much better than the stock 5.0 intake. Maybe you'd be better off with a GT-40 or TrickFlow intake. Unless of course you can get a killer deal on a Cobra intake...

have you thought about stroking it to a 347 instead of a 331?

? i dunno the motor is in the car now. I am getting a check today or tomorrow for about 2300, but 600 has to go to bills and about 200 on shoes and stuff and 200 on new lights for car, and a starter, then the rest is for my car.i just really want a low low 13 sec car or even high 12's. The thing is the motor needs redone, it smokes when i get on it, the pvp valve allways pops off and oil goes everywhere, when i get about 60+mph the car vibes, brand new driveshaft (might buy the aluminum one). Othere than those problems and a problem with the timing. I can't advance the timing b/c some thing that plugs into the distributor is gone, it tells the computer info. We pluged a good one in off my bro's car and it would die at the stop light and it ran like crap. Took it out bumped the timing to like 20 and listened for noise, sounded good so we ran that way. Some had said when i had it in it was reading right, but i might have a bad sensor, b/c even with it out it sounded like it had a mist.
