They are bolted onto the main caps providing an additional stiffener.

they basically prevent the main caps from "walking" by tying them all together. it does stiffen up your block too. as he said above

i personaly hold the opinion that it will not allow a stock block to take more HP, and when it does finally crap its internals out, it will only hold them together inside the engine instead of spitting them all over the pavement.

That's my understanding of how they work as well. I've looked at a few and don't honestly see how they are supposed to allow you get more HP out of a stock block.... Unless I'm missing something here.

they just allow the block to hold that extra hp a little longer than if you didn't have one on.

allright here goes, i know alot of you will disagree, but i have a couple friends running a little over 500rwhp on the stock block with a main girdle. the few stang gurus in my area that i know will refuse to build up a stock 302 over 400rwhp without a main girdle, reason being, one of the mains could be a weak point and the girdle redistributes the stress evenly throughout the caps (i'm just repeating what i've been told, like a parrott, so don't take it out on me[8D]). i'm no expert on this subject... but from what i've seen, and witnessed, it will hold it together a little better. how much can the girdle be accredited for? ...who knows, it might all be a coincidence, but if you can put one on during the build, then why not? what do you have to lose? obviously it can and will still split if you go crazy, but personally i think it does help, at least a little bit.

got a good friend of mine that puts down 553RWHP/565 RWTQ on a stock block, 331 with DSS pro pistons, forged everything, and a girdle. holds together great. I believe in em.

It's all coincidence. Those motors will live just as well without the girdle. What do they have to lose? About $100-200 depending on brand. My last stock shortblock made over 400rwhp and has for 3 years now (I sold it to a friend) with no issues. 400rwhp isn't even pushing it to me on a stock block anymore.

Here is a video of my friend's car from last weekend. It's a stock shortblock with over 200k on it. It's seen at least a dozen passes at over 134mph with this being the best.
