Default 2nd Gear and Reverse Giving Problems

Hi, i own a 1988 Mustang Gt and i have been starting to notice that 2nd gear and Reverse want to pop out at times. What i mean is like if I am slowing down and i put it in 2nd sometimes it wants to not go in but then it does. Then when i get on it and i try to put it in second sometimes it wants to grind and hard to get in. Now with the Reverse it just seems like it never gets in to gear right. For example i will be backing up and the more torque that is givin to it the more it is likely it will try to pop out. So do you think my linkage is off? Or maybe those two gears are going? Or just my Tranny is going? Well if you could help me out it would help me out before i take it to the tranny man.

THANKS!!!

~Nick

a buddy of mine has the same problem with his 2nd and 3rd gear he says its the slider for the gear in the transmission but to replace it you have to rip it apart so you might as well rebuild the whole thing

I have learned to rebuild these things, and a rebuild is what you need no matter what the problem is. It could be the blocker ring is weakened, or the detent ***** and their respective springs are weak. First see if you can deal with those first. A detent ball keeps you from popping out of gear once your in it, and without the proper spring pressure, you pop out. The blocker rings are what you feel click when you go into gear. That could be the issue, or more likely, it is the 2nd gear synchro. Either one of these issues, require a rebuild. But that is somewhere to start from.

also check your clutch cable i am having the same problem, but mines was with 3rd and 2nd. i started with my cable and noticed it was loose, once i tightented it up and changed my tranny fluid everything shifted fine. now im getting the problem again so i do believe my cable is stretching so its going to be replaced. any other thoughts on what mine could be im all ears. My prob was very similar to yours where it would be hard to shift pretty much having to slam it in gear a few timnes beofre it would go in. Now when im at idle with clutch in and i rev the engine my car moves forward, like my clutch isnt even engaging.

well thanks for the info if anyone knows of anything more then dont be affraid to write. Well and for diablo that does sound like a clutch thing so i would get that checked out because you never know when it might go. I had a friend that had a 89 white GT and he would beat the hell out of it and then one day he had his girl friend in the car with bald burnout tires on it and the clutch disingaged and the thing went into a wall and good bye stang.

Well thanks!!!
