I just got my 3g alt for 35 bucks, its installed...is it necessary to use the 4 gauge wire?

Well, I have run mine for 3 years now w/o it w/ no problems. However, when I did the one on my wifes car, I used the 4g wire w/ a 150amp fuse.

It's a toss up I guess.

Did it make a difference in your wifes car? did the meter go higher?

Nope. Just the opposite actually. Maybe there's something wrong w/ her alt. I put underdrives on it at the same time though.

I had to switch back to the stock 75 amp alternator pulley even with the 130 amp alternator. The lights were still dimming.
The underdrives were the only reason I bought a 130 amp alternator.

Now my alternator is overdriven and it charges fine.
