question
ok, so im thinking i might be getting some gears and i asked my brother about it
he said that since i have 2.73s and i want to go to either a 3.55 or 3.73 i would have to get a new posi unit, is that true? he also said that it would be easier for me to find a whole rear end and swap rear ends.
if thats true im thinking that it would be easier for me in the long run (if thatstrue)to find a rear end with thegears i wantand swap it over to five lug, since i would have to switch rear ends. and then do the front to five lug too. (the only thing with that is new wheels, and tires..)
(and im not knowledgable about these things, but he is and i wanted to get yalls opinions on this, sorry so long)

RE: question
so your saying it will be easier to find a rear end with the gears i want and go ahead and switch to 5 lug than changing what i have to better gears?
also, what do i have to do on the front to change from 4 lug to 5 lug?

RE: question
no hes saying, to use your rear end, and while your in there switch gears to rebuild the traction-lok and put new bearings in.
this way you know its all fresh. it you buy a unit already togather you dont know if the stuff is worn out or not

RE: question
If you plan on keeping power around stock or don't drive it hard go ahead and rebuild the trak-lok. Otherwise if you plan on beatin on your car, upgrade the carrier, to a locker or true-trac type. The family friend who does rear ends (that's all he does basically, and really knows his stuff) says that the trak-loks are garbage and wear out quickly.
You can keep the regular trak-lok and just change the gears if you wanted, so if all you wanted was gears, then you can do that.
Stock axles are 28 splined, so if you were going to swap to 5lug you will need 28 splined axles. www.50resto.com sells a nice 5lug kit, I bought it and am using it on my car, I just recently bought spindles and brake assembly off of a 97 mustang and am using that right now. Spindles and brakes from a 94-95 mustang would be ideal though because it keeps the stock track width, while the 96+ push out the wheels 8mm.
Here's a site you can reference if you wanted to go the junkyard route
http://mjbobbitt.home.comcast.net/mu...n95brakes.html
Lastly, I would do all of the 5lug and rear gear stuff at one time, since your going to have the rearend open already, saves you from having to do it twice.

RE: question
my bro told me that hes going from a 2.73 to a 3.45 in his camaro, and the 2.73 carrier unit wouldnt work, he had to get a new 3 series posi carrier. does this apply to mustangs as well?

RE: question
No, it's a Ford, not a Chebby ..... All you need to swap is the gears and you're fine....and have the TracLok rebuilt while you've got it open. You can add extra friction shims to make it more rigid if you buy an extra shim kit, also.
Go at least 3.73's....

RE: question
+1^^^^ Gear is all that you HAVE to change, but its a good idea to freshen everything up. Might as well buy a gear installation bearing kit from motive or someone else that offers them and do it all while you are in there. If you don't change the bearings, since you will be turning the rear end faster more frequently, you're bearing will wear faster and that dreaded whine will start coming from the rear end. Its always good to go with better parts like some people suggest, but not everyone gets the choice of whether or not to put new things in, so yes your carrier and spider gears will work, and upgrade if able. Good luck

RE: question
sounds like youre drowning in a glass of water.
go w/the 4.10's unless youre gonna boost or juice, even
though i had a friend who ran w/ 4.10's w/75 shot.
you dont have to touch anything else, master bearing kit is all.
4.10's kick a$$
