Default pos aod

We freshly installed an AOD in the wifees 5.0l and the shift points seem jacked up. I have never driven another auto 5.0 but it goes through the gears way fast under normal driving. Also, at about 30-35 mph it acts jerky, like its lugging in third when it should be in second. Maybe i'm just paranoid, but it doesn't seem right. Is there a way to adjust the shift points on the tranny. Its not a new trans, just new to me. I was told it came from a 91 so I threw it in. Any ideas?

Make sure you check the TB kick down cable. It sounds like your car is shifting into the next highest gear too earlier. If that is the case it would be the same feeling as in a 5 speed when you shift too early.

I wouldn't exactly call the tranny a POS if you don't have it set-up correctly. Take it to a Ford dealership and have them hook up a line pressure gauge and adjust your throttle valve cable, it's set way too low from what you have described, it needs to be between 0 and 5 psi at idle. If you remove the adjustment block/cable from the bottom of the throttle body there should be no tension and no slack in the cable, adjust it accordingly until you can get a gauge on it.

yes, I installed it and I didn't check the kick down. First Ford for me. Kicks down fine at wide open throttle, but it does lug like its shifting way early.

I have a 90 5.0 and mine shifts just fine...it is completely stock though and has never been messed with by anyone.....she does not have any hard, jerks or any faulty feeleing on the shifting and it idols at about 450 rmp. She has an overdrive that asks to be shifted in about 45 though so i am not sure if you have overdrive on yours or not. but my AOD is the sweetest, smoothest car i have ever owned. just a little on the sherman tank side of a ride with the suspension on it...lol

mine idles a bit rough, but about 9. I agree it shifts smooth, a little too smooth for my taste, but for the wife it's fine. I thought it may have an adjustment similar to a th350. Like I said my first Ford project. Does have an E303. Maybe not getting enough vacuum??
