Default price for machine work

i am contemplating ordering a 347 stroker kit and i jsut talked to a machinist

he told me for the work to the block it would run me about $500

then to assemble the rotating assembly it would be another $450

are these prices about accurate?

With the assembly does that include balancing. Seems a little high if it doesn't.

+1 That does seem a little high. I remember calling a shop a while back and I think they said something like $600 total... not positive though so dont take my word for it

yeah, cause you'd use stock heads and a stock cam in a stroker motor..........

It costed me about 1000 for them to prep the block, paint it, balance everything, and shortblock it for me.

Are they going to Blueprint the block for you? $450 for just assembly (even including the balancing) seem about 100 too high.

But then it also depends, are they charging you hourly rate or flat rate?

Here where I am at, machine work runs aboot $70hr. Figure notching block, cylinder work, and hone lifter bores in new block, about 10-11 hours. I will let those who are curious do the math. Machine work can be VERY high to the point where it seems rediculous, and some times sooooo low that it seems too good to be true (in a lost of cases it is). I have been using the same folks for years and would use them at any shop rate. I build my own motors so all I need is the finish machine work. It saves some buckage.
