just got a 88 hatch lx. i got this problem which i hope to be small. i got this pop noise coming from the engine, sounds like someone is shooting a cap gun. basically when i rev the engine, sometimes ill hear POP and sometimes nothing. at first i thought it was the exhaust but i know its coming from the engine, and ideas why. the cars at my school so i cant play with it now but when i go back on tuesday i want to be able to jump right on it. thanks

no, i drove it around the parking lot, like full throttle and it semed ok, i didnt hear anything, it just when i have it in neutral and rev it.

is is one loud pop or a bunch of little ones?

could be pinging... could be suspension.....

hey i just did a free carfax it says the car is FI. um is that supposed to be EFI for electoricly fuel injected

basically if u give it a rev up to maybe 3k itll do one loud pop. sounds like backfire but its not from the exhaust. and it doesnt do it everytime.

EFI, FI (as long as they didn't mean forced induction! which I'm sure they didn't)same thing. What's your timing set at and what kind of fuel are you running?

can fuel cause this? when i got the car it had a full tank. the owner kept it garaged the whole winter untill thursday and he said he hasent driven it in a long while. how do i check the timing

it might have old gas in it i have no idea. but what should i check. the wires, spark plugs maybe some new gas ( its like an 1/8 not full)
