Default CAI causing lean?

I have an 88 GT non-MAF. I put a fenderwell BBK CAI on, put a junk mass air to take up the space, and upgraded to a high flow BBK fuel pump. I also installed 2 new o2 sensors. Since then, the car is still throwing lean codes and backfiring. The motor sounds like it is sucking real hard to run. Could the fact that I have added a high amount of air be causing this backfire or other should I be looking for other problems?

Fuel pump was done by mechanic. I don't have a place to drop the tank. The fuel pressure is higher than the stock pump. I have adjusted the timing, reset the TPS, tuned it up, cleaned the throttle body and the plenum. Any other suggestions?

based on your very vague description, it could be anything from a clogged fuel filter to a bad PCM. we need to know more symptoms.

Fuel filter changed with fuel pump. I have had the car for about 2 years. Always ran fine, but always had an idle problem. I followed all the steps on here to cure the problem, and in the process, found out my balancer had spun. Replaced that and found my timing was wacked. Adjusted the timing, running super gas, no problems. Went six months, car ran fine. One day on way home, rock pieced my radiator and I ended up limpingit home, but not before it blew up my heater core. As far as I can tell, nothing else was damaged. Replaced raditor, wp, hoses, tstat, bypassed heater core. Car still ran ok, but not as good as before. Added CAI and then my problems began. I am reallystumped at this point. I did take the time to flush my system when I replaced everything, and the coolant was a nasty brown with some chunks in it. Project car gone bad. Anyhelp would be great. Love to cruise with the top down this summer.

Dont know how true this is, but i had a guy that owns a mustang specialty shop tell me that you really should have your car tuned after doing CAI. I had a few mods and came across a diablo chip and needed it tuned so went and got the tune done. Turns out i was running very lean with my CAI and it was causing me to backfire some. Since then, no backfires, same CAI.

Removing fuel tank might have stired up trash that clogged injectors. Test fuel pressure under load to make sure pressure is not dropping because if it does have higher pressure than you should be running rich. Good luck.
