Default temperature gauge!

the temp gauge doesnt seem to work properly. it always reads that its running super hot even going past the red and further to the right. every once in a while it reads somewhat normal temperatures but it rarely happens.what needs to be fixed or checked? thanks in advance

This is straight from my Ford repair manual..

The sensor is located on the block cylinder headorintake manifold..To test, the sender should read 10 ohms hot and 74 ohms cold,

And they arent too much $ to replace.
