i only use 10w30... it doesnt matter if its winter or summer, modern oil technologies include certain anti-gelling traits that allow you to run many different oils in varying situations. Where i live, 10w30 is fine year round

i have hadvery good luck semi synthetic 10W-30motorcraft oil ($2.23 per Qt) and motorcraft filters. IMO, if you are going to be changing your oil every 3k, just stick with coventional oil. If you are going to go 5k or so then maybe think about a good sythetic oil. Synthetic oil is only proven to be necessary in very extreme conditions or where a extended oil change intervals are neededand doesnt really constituit spending $4-$6 fora quart for oil. It also will not hurt a thing if you switch from synthetic to coventional also..
