Ok, I'm going to make timing a motor really easy for everyone, and its the right way since setting it to factory specs will only help a car lot car with economy and everything Factory!
Advance the timing by rotating you distributer clockwise or counter clockwise either way depending which engine you have. Now drive the car at 1000 rpm in 3rd or 4th gear, and floor the gas,we are trying to put a load on the moter.we want the motor to ping or knockNow, keep doing this procedure until it pings or knocks, that means too much advance, just what we wanted to know, now retard the timing just a hair, drive it, if it still pings or knocks, alittle more retarding, repeat this procedure untill no ping. You are now properly timed for the conditionof the motor, any parts that are new or old and the octane you currentlyy have in the gas tank.Method #2If you have a timing light, unhook the vacum hose to the distributer and steadilyrev the motor to 3,000rpm and advance the distributor until the harmonic balencer stops moving, you will see this with the light. When it does you are at full advance for your current conditions. I like the knock method my self because the motor is telling me what it wants and not the other way around, with a timing light I telling it what I want and may not be as accurate as the other method, which by the way is right on every time!

I just assumed (and we all know what that means) that we were talking about a 302 EFI timing.
And ifwe are talking about the timing marks for a EFI 302 the dial (timing pointer) is located here.

Your probably use to seeing this
as the timing pointer?

Here are a few more pics where the timing pointer (dial) is located.
