The other day I was trying to pull codes off of my car but wasn't sure what to setting to put my volt meter on. Second how many times will the code flash?

My guess would be 12v but you dont even need a voltmeter. Your dash will flash you the codes in the same way a voltmeter will sweep the needle. Can even use a test light.

the engine light will flash engine codes. you just count them. for example a code 42 would flash 4 times followed by a short pause then flash 2 more times. there will be a longer pause then the engine light will repeat the code.

 

my car doesnt have a check engine since its an 88, it will throw a couple codes for a min then it wont do it again, is there a time limit or something? also the dash lights do not flash
