how much would you pay

how much would you pay
for an 87 LX with 117,500 miles on it? Its completely stock except for a shifter. The interior is that red and is in horrible shape. Its dirty and torn. Its missing some speakers and speaker covers. All the plastic trimming inside needs to be replaced along with carpep, headliner, the whole nine yards. The exterior has a few tiny rust spots. the paint is in decent shape but far from glossy. The headlight covers are completly yellow, the hatch won't shut, and the passenger door won't open from the outside. The power door locks don't work either. We fired it up and it started right away and ran smoothly. (it had been sitting for months) A shop would rebuild the tranny before they sold it. It also has two flat tires and the stock rims. He wants 2500 for it. It seems like way too much to me. KBB is 725. What do you think?

RE: how much would you pay
Well I paid $2150 for mine and this is what I got:
All aftermarket parts and paint were less than a year old. There is a couple rust bubbles on the hatchback, but it came wit another hatchback. The interrior definately looks 20 years old.
'83 with front from a '90
8.8" rear with 4.10'a
upper and lower control arms
Eibach draglaunch kit
90/10 shocks in the front and 50/50 in the rear
Pro 5.0 shifter
T-5 tranny (it was originally a 4 speed car)
brand new BFG TAs on the front and BFG drag radials out back.
Motor from an '88 with mach pullies, edelbrock intake, and holley 650 cfm carb.
Ther is more that I didn't bother to list, and even though I planned on replacing the engine right away, I can't kill it.
So it sounds like the one you are looking at isn't really worth the asking price

Start at $1000 and work your way up but don't go higher than $1500. Never start off by offering your max. amount you want to pay.
Show him the blue book value and some cash. If he won't take you maximun offer then walk away. Sometimes, when they think you are about to leave, they get more willing to negotiate with you.

wow! quick responses. I told him about the blue book value, and he started talking about how everybody marks up their price a bit and that all stangs are like that[sm=icon_blah.gif][sm=icon_blah.gif]. i will show him the printout of the value and i might show he some cash. we'll see. but yeah, i think the most i will pay for is 1500.

RE: how much would you pay
heres the story with sheila.
i saw an add on ebay for a nice green purty stang, 91 LX bone stock down to stock smog and intake.
so i email the seller and tell him i want to meet up and look at the stang. he wanted 4200 very firm and i wanted the car. exterior was above average with decent paint except a few rough spots. interior was superb with no rips or stains. the tranny felt smooth and engine ran fine from what i heard/smelled. after a week of grueling waiting i told him 4000 and he said NO LESS NO LESS. so then an hour before he was supposed to drive the car over i was on the phone with him about how high the miles are on the car. i told him 3900 or no deal.
in the end the predator turned into the prey, dont let a seller try to scare you by saying FIRM or I CAN SELL IT FOR THIS PRICE TOMORROW. you need to be the skank or else you wont get what you want. wurd...
