3.55's or 3.73
I drive a 94 GT with a manual trans., and I was wondering what the best rearend setup would be. I want to keep my top end speed, but i also want to get the best acceleration. Is there a big margin of difference between the 3.55's and the 3.73's in both of these areas? I was also wondering what kind of number changes each gear provided in accel. and top end.
Thanks,
Zach

for more topend racing go 355 now if you dont mind losing some mph on topend go 373. personally if i was building a car for mid to topend range i would use 355. with them you can stay in the gears longer and be in the power bands alot longer

get the 3.73's. 3.55's are a waste. i was in the same boat as you when i was picking gears so i made a graph. the rpm difference between 3.55's and 3.73's is never more then 300rpm. if you want to save 300 rpms then get the 3.55's (stupid idea) if 300 rpms dont mean anything (which they dont) then get the 3.73's

you can't have both a max top end speed and max acceleration at the same time since you give up something from one to improve the other. lower rear gears, (higher numerical gear ratios like 3.73 or 4.10) will greatly improve the acceleration but reduce the top end speed while higher rear gears (lower numerical ratios like 2.73 or 3.08) will give higher top end speed but much slower acceleration, so it's up to you what you want the most of, acceleration or top end, then pick a gear which give you the desired outcome. personally I think the 3.73 gears are the best compromise between acceleration and top end for a street driven Stang and they don't hurt the gas mileage all that much either. besides, who wants a big top end speed if it takes forever to get there!
