the gauge problem is more than likely the fuel sending unit in the tank...

more than likely caused by a broken fuel tank baffle, which is responsible for breaking your sending unit clean in half.

drop your tank, i'll bet my paycheck that i'm right.

If you go to a junkyard with some mustangs I'm sure you could get the gas tank with everything on it for less than 50 bucks. I got one complete with fuel pump and sending unit for free the other day.

yah, and i bet the baffle is close to breaking if not already broke.

if that baffle breaks, it causes all sorts of problems.

fuel starvation is just the start of it.

i already told you. its the fuel tank baffle.
the baffle is a circular piece of metal that the pump submerges into. the purpose of the baffle is to keep the pump cool and constantly supplied with fuel.

it is welded inside the tank with two tiny spot welds.
after time, the welds break, from fuel slosh.

in the process, it usually takes out the fuel sending unit with it, because the fuel throws it around.
you will more than likely find that the fuel pump bracketry is bent from the baffle sliding out from under the pump.

may not need to replace the tank.. I dropped mine and found that my sending unit was rusted in half. I had to turn the tank upside down to get all of the pieces out. I lived with the broken guage for about a year till all the rusted pieces clogged up my pump sock and made the pump go out. The sending unit was $90 from ford alone, not exactly a cheap sensor (to me). Then I figured sense I was gonna get a new pump and sending unit, I went ahead and bought a new tank just to know I wont have to mess with it for another 20 years. Sensor = $90 from ford, pump ~ $120 for a 190lph tank was $125 from a local distributor, and the filler neck grommet was another $15 form ford.
