No timing mark

No timing mark
I have recently done some work to my car and had a rough spot around 1800 RPM so i decided to try and time it. I looked everywhere for a mark but there isn't one. There is a homemade chalk mark on balancer and wasn't in time with it so i tried that but now car is running worse, no power, and popping under the hood. Is there another way i can time it or do i need another balancer or what? I marked it before changing time but it didn't seem right to begin with, i just want to be sure what its timed at. Any suggestions?
Thanks

RE: No timing mark
Thanks, i guess i need something better than sandpaper the groove might be filled with rust or something.
I just put a new distributor cap on and have alot of buildup on contacts after only about 50 miles. Was suggested its pre igniting because of timing or my coil is weak so figured i put timing back to stock first.

RE: No timing mark
If you can't find the timing marks, what in the world did you set the timing to???The pointer should be on the pass side of the balancer, and there are marks on the balancer somewhere! Clean the whole way around it until you find them! When the light flashes the pointer and the 10-14 numbers should be at the same place to be in time! You can't just turn the dist without some reference, and expect to be anywhere close!
