Yes, oxygen sensors control air/fuel ratios. Without them our computers would end up guessing on mixture ratios and as a result the car would run like crap (and it uses more fuel than is needed)

haha nope all cars need oxygen sensors (unless you are running a stand-alone computer and can calculate the proper air/fuel ratios and control them yourself)

My 88 has no smog pump, cats or any of the BS smog piping and when I replaced the h-pipe with an off-road x-pipe I also replaced both oxygen sensors. I noticed a little better gas mileage!

the smog system and the o2's are only loosly related. granted o2's will ensure the car runs the correct afr causing the car to run cleaner (i.e pass smog) but just because you dont have smog equipment, doesnt mean you dont need o2's your motor still needs them to run correctly

The only way you can get away with no O2 sensors is if you get a tune. you can force the car to run in Open Loop all the time. Then you can manually enter all of the fuel tables. But that's a pain in the ***. If you're at that point, then you might as well just switch to carb.

if you need to drill your pipes and make a spot for them, make sure you put them relatively close to where they used to be.
