Default Starter question

I think my starter is on its way out, what happens is I try to start the car and the starter just won't spin it seems. I turn the key a few more times and it will start right up. It does not always hang up, just some times. I think it has a short in the starter, what do you guys think it is. I want to make sure before I go get a hi torque mini starter.

check all your connections first and test the selonoid with a test light when it acts up and see if you are getting 12 volts to the cranking side and check for voltage drop with a multimeter

thanks mjr46, I will look at the connections first, I did go back to the office and get my volt meter, what should be the minimum volt dropage when I turn the motor over? btw, I did the 3 g Alt. and wired it to my solenoid and not the battery, will that matter.

get a test light. stick the test light on the wire terminal & wire coming off the starter.
have someone hit the key. if the light turns on, and the starter doesnt spin, its bad, or the connection is loose/corroded

typical rule of thumb I believe is .3 to .5of a volt.... any more than that and you have high resistance in a cable or corrosion on a connection

I think I have a problem for sure, I did a quick check a while back and I was going from 13 volts down to 10 volts or so when I started the car up.

where were yo getting a reading of 10 voltts??? remember when testing for voltage drop place one lead as close to the positive post of the barttery as possible and with the other lead check each point or connection where current passes through a connection or device until finally reaching the starterand note your drop any reading greater then .5 of a volt and there is a problem as ageneral rule of thumb......remember voltage always drops as current flows through the resistance or a load.
