Default Exhaust question???

I took my exhaust off today to get my tranny out to rebuild it and swap out my clutch and noticed that right below the headers there are a set of cats, then about a foot back theres another set of cats, and then the mufflers....Whats the point in 4 cats? can i take a pair of them off to make it louder?

the first cats are precats...they are used to warm up the O2 sensors for more efficiant(if thats how you spell it lol) operation.

+1 on getting an o/r pipe btw.

gee, i always thought the incoming voltage on the o2 heater circuit did that...

the car has 4 cats as mandated by the DOT in the 80s for these cars.

im positive that they are also used to heat up the o2 sensors before the car is fully warmed up.
