Well do you have that "rich gas smell"? If so, then it's burning rich upon start up, and is leveling out down the road. Could be a million things if it's this.

If there is no odd rich smell, then I'm thinking that it may be part of the EGR system that's going out.

it does have that rich gas smell. whats the most common problem when it has this smell? could it also be a clogged cat?

Well cats filter out the smell, so it being cloged doesn't make sense to me. It's one of many possible things, so to narrow the search down more, does the car idel normally, start normally, run throught out all RPM ranges normally. In other words, if "anything" at all isn't normal, then what's it doing. I'm willing to bet it's the EGR system, just did a little bit of reading up on the system, and how it functions, and it "can" cause a car to burn excessivly rich and therefor have black smoke, but the fact that it goes away is a little odd, I'm banking more on the EGR sensor, or the valve itself is faulty.

Second thought about the cats, is your "check engine light" on. If it isn't then the cats are fine, if it is, then they're probably cloged, but even being cloged I don't see hoe they'd make black smoke under normal circumstances that just "goes away".

The egr system is not functional on a cold engine. It could be an injector/s leaking down, leaving extra fuel in the combustion chamber and being burned on start up. That would explain why after start up, it goes away. Could be a lot of things including an o2 sensor or a bad ect, but the egr not being one of them.

well i just replaced the ect sensor so impretty sure it isnt that and it runs perfect throughout the rpm range. i havent noticed any changes in the way it runs. is this a major cause for concern?

its definately running rich, cars usually run rich during cold starts to help warm it up, egr has nothing to do with it along with clogged cats, changing the ect sensor would help if it was faulty. If you have access to a scan tool check out your readings otherwise check your air filter, 02 sensors and possibly leaking injectors.
