Default RE: Engine Code help

Well, I drove the car over to a friend of mines house. He is a mechanic by trade. As soon as I pulled up he said that I was running very rich. He is thinking that the car is thinking it is running lean because of a vaccum leak, thus flooding it with gas and making the injectors fire at the wrong time. Something like that at least. So I think that I am going to try to somehow verify that.

Being a smoker, would there be any issues with pulling off the BB vaccum line, plugging off the TB, and blowing smoke through it to try and finda leak?

A little advice here...... the only way the system would be rich and read lean, is if the O2 readings are either shorted or fubar .....system reads lean and continues to ramp up the fuel trim waiting for the O2 readings to switch rich, but since the signal is fubar, they will never "see" the rich condition. If it was flooding it with gas, the O2s (provided they are not defective), would be able to "see" that excess fuel in the exhaust....... just a thought.

K, thanks for the advice Joel. I will perform the tests below on the O2 senors and see if they are defective. They are a little banged up from the guy who had the car b4 me. So maybe they are both defective, or the ground is screwed.

Thanks again for the help.

Ok, so I checked the O2 sensors, they appear to be ok. I then pulled off my intake, and had a buddy put his had over the throttle body. I blew into the brak boosted vacuum line, and heard a leak comming from my valve cover gasket. Weird thing is it does not leak any oil. Has anyone ever heard of a vacuum leak at the valve cover gaskets causing issues?

that is prolly just the pcv system you are hearing. not the valve cover gasket. i am not sure if that would mean the pcv is bad or not.. but. that is proll y your pcv.. not the gasket.
