T-5 syncro problem
Hi i have a t-5 with a 5th gear grind. All the other gears shift good but everytime I shift into 5th it gives a bad grind. I have to double clutch and shift slowly to get it into gear without the noise. Does it sound like a syncro? I just bought the car and this was a problem when I bought it so I am not sure how long it has been doing it.Is it a pain to fix? anyone know about what it costs to fix? Thanks in advance.
sincro and or blocker ring..I believe the 5th gear uses a brass blocker ring...to repair it tranny has to come out and thecase top has to come off of tranny and then you can remove the rear tailshaft case assembly to access the 5th gear hub assembly. it's not a hard repair a few hours to do the whole job plus remove and reinstall tranny
I had the exact same problem and I ended up replacing the 5th gear brass ring and all is well. (Luckily the dealer had it in stock for like $20) I would of liked to replaced the entire synchro unit, but the ring did the trick.

Be sure to put a block of wood under the 5th gear fork as you are driving out the pin from the shaft - those instructions don't tell you that.
Removing the 5th gear synchro assembly ain't as easy as those instructions show it to be.It took me the better part of 5 hours [:@]after the tranny was out of the car, as I ran into some issues as it was my first t5 I ever took apart. Then I sealed it up let it dry and reinstalled it. Dont let the sychro tabs come apart, but I suppose you can mark which slots the go in before it comes out so you can put them back where they belong. Cause they all look the same afterwards.

........I was in a hurry when typing .........either way they both have to comeoff
5th is all kinds of simple... top cover DOESNT have to come off... 5th is in the tailshaft... if u want(personally, im comfortable w. the t5 enough that i would) u can do it w. the trans in the car
take the shifter off, knock out the roll pin...
unbolt the tailshaft and take it off... there ur looking at 5th...
knock out the roll pin...
theres a c clip holding 5th's **** all on... take it off, and all the fun **** comes off in order... just deal w. the countershaft, not anything to do w. the mainshaft... wont even have to take the actual 5th gear off, just the syncro set up in front(or behind depending on how u look at it) of the actual gear... easy job... cake work...
