step 1- go to auto parts store and buy a Ford high pressure fuel line disconnect tool so you can break the connections on the fuel lines so you can remove the lower intake manifold
step 2 - get a Haynes manual on the small block Ford while you're at the auto parts store and read the section on removing the intake manifold.

Are "lifters" and "pushrods" one in the same?

I have the factory ford manual, which is way better than the haynes. but still it doesnt say if there are any special tools needed to do this.

NO- the lifters ride on the lobes of the camshaft and the pushrods ride in the top of the lifter and transfer the up/down motion of the lifters to the rocker arms which in turn open/close the valves as directed by the lobes on the cam.

Trust me on this one, you will need the special tool available at most decent auto parts stores to break the special high pressure connections on the Ford fuel lines before you can remove the lower intake manifold. they are two different sizes of lines and a tool for both sizes made of hard plastic is available for under $20 at most places.

I was able to remove and install my new intake manifold without taking out the fuel lines. It is tight, but I had no problems.
