Default oil pressure

hey i have a 1990 5.0 it has about 165k i noticed when i was racing a lil import i was going about 95 in fourth and like 4500 rpm and i look at my gauges and my oil pressure was reading zero so i backed off imediatly and wen i slowed down to like 60 at 3000 rpm i had pressure again you think the oil pump is going bad and if so it sucks becouse i dont feel like pulling the motor to do it comments would be great

you dont have to pull the motor you can just unbolt it from the mounts and jack it up enough to get your hand in the pan to take the pump off

if your oil pressure really did go to 0 at 95 in fourth you may have to pull the motor.....and put a new one in. that motor is moving fairly fast at 95 in fourth not to get any oil. i would just start saving your money so when your oil pump does fail you can get a new engine.

one thing that will help your motor is not to race anymore, especialy those ricers

before pulling anything off..go get a mechanical test gauge for test purposes and make sure your getting the same symptoms to occur on the mechanical gauge that you did on your stock gauge...if you do then it'll be a internal pressure problem...one thing to check are the galley plugs that are pressed in under the timing cover one of them is for the lifter bores...under high r's mine would loose pressure and then at an idle return to normal...turns out one of the plugs blew out racing[:@]....anyway perform the above stated test before doing any work to make sure you have the problem narrowed down to a pump

well it's not just in the bottom end or engine...you'll need supporting mods like gears suspension mods and exhaust and headers just a few things to mention.........but here's what I had and ran 12.20's easily.........92 roller cam block bored .030 , forged I beam rods, .200 dome kb pistons with afr 185's = 11 to 1 compression.....xe 282 hr cam....565/574.....rpm air gap intake , 650 carb, full length headers, bottom end balanced, aluminum flywheel, elec fan and elec water pump, roller rockers...ect ect.. and the list goes on but that's the base block build and bolt ons...you'll need some cam, heads, and good flat top forged pistons, and a good intake and roller rockers to start and most of all know how to drive your ace off down the 1320!!!!

Have you checked your oil level? If you're running low then at higher rpm the pump is moving more oil than is being returned, and the pickup is running dry. Definately check with a real gauge first though.
