Default big eletrical problem...... help please.

The wife was driving home from work in the 85 gt, and when she was about 4 blocks from our house she went over a speed bump which caused her headlights to go out, all power to everything to go out, and for the car to die. it acts like there is no battery installed in the vehicle, i checked the battery connections there good, battery is 12.85 volts, and even tried swapping out a battery that i know is good. I took apart the steering column shroud and the ignition box is perfect, nothing is wrong there. The ground for the battery is still nicely in place bolted to the engine mount. Now what in gods name could be making this car seem like there is no battery installed?

yes i checked the ground, and what short would cause me to lose power to everything? when you turn your key on, does it engage a solinoid that gives power to your ignition/headlights/radio/dashlights ect? or does your ignition switch act as the switch to power all of the key on things in your car?

Follow your alternator wire back to the distribution box. There will be a little cover where the main red alternator wire bolts to it. Take that cover off and make sure the nut is tight. If it is then you will need to check for power there when the car acts up.

Check your fusable links. They will be near the engine compartment fuse box.

happened on my 82, it was a fusible link, check the links connected to the solenoid with an ohm meter.

wow iam blind, go out there in daylight to see what the hell was going on, just 2 inches from the + starter solinoid terminal there was a fusable link that was half melted to **** and half pulled apart, replaced it with a inline fuse and its all good now. wow i never new losing that one hot side to the interior power would kill ignition to, but it makes sense, if theres no power at the ignition assembly then there cant be power sent back to the ignition system.
