So a buddy of mine has a 91 thunderbird with a 5.0 and an aod, it has high miles, around 135k, he just bought the car not to long ago and just got it safetied and is working on the etest so hasnt gotten around to looking at the tranny but when he bought it the guy told him to drive around in drive b ecause the overdrive doesnt work. I havent been in the car my self when the cars in OD but my friends says that when it should shift into 4th it goes into neutral, any ideas?

RE: AOD Problem
What it be much cheaper to rebuild one versus going to the wreakers and getting one, its his daily driver so i dont think he can have it off the road very long, and he doesnt have much experince so he probably wouldnt be able to do it very quick

RE: AOD Problem
I completely agree and if it was my car id rebuild it, im not a fan of buying used things(car or otherwise) but iknow the way he does things (actuall now that i bring that up hell most likely drive it with 3 gears lol) and i think he'd want one thats just ready to go back on. What does a rebuild kit cost roughly, and do you know anywhere that sell decent kits

RE: AOD Problem
The kits are not that expensive, but unless you have experience rebuilding trannies, the AOD is not for the beginner. They are very tempormental when it comes to the shift points, and they require some special tools, sothey are better left to an experienced rebuilder. If you decide to do your own (it is possible for the shadetree mechanic), there are some good videos out there that can guide you (Bad Shoe Productions is one of the better ones). Typical rebuild cost range from $1000 to over$2000 for a quality build.
