Default Modding an 87 5.0

No experience with the 5.0 only with the 4.6 and I have a few questions. We have a bone stock 87 GT, when we switch to a 2 1/2 cat back and off road H pipe will we need mil eliminators and 02 sensors like the 4.6 to prevent check engine lights? How do you advance the timing on these to 14 degrees advance? Will the stock 28 spline axles hold up with drag radials if we can hook them? Thanks for your help.

Stock axles are fine at stock power levels, bump that up significantly and you'll start breaking stuff.

MIL eliminators? CEL? lol OBD2 wasn't around much before 96, so iirc the only time you get a CEL on these old 5.0's is if the engine isn't running, possibly if the oil pressure is too low as well.

Advancing the timing is easy, but my brain isn't working right now so I can't tell you what the thing is called that you have to plug/unplug before setting base timing.

The 87 does not have a working check engine light so no on the MIL eliminators.
To set the timing with the engine at normal operating temp remove the spout and set timing then recheck after tightening the dist then reinstall the spout.
Picture inseted is a pic of the spout.

You can get engine lights with the engine running, and OBD I don't give a toot if yo got oil pressure or not.

I know OBD 1 and 2 don't care about oil pressure, but I don't know if the oil pressure sender fires off an oil light or the CEL. OBD2 cares about O2 sensor feedback, not sure about OBD1.

What causes the CEL on older cars? I've never gotten one in my 5.0 except when the engine actually stalled before I bumped my idle up.

most off road H-pipe come with bungs to mount the stock O2 sensors in them, so you don't need to worry about no MIL eliminators or lights coming on. and the stock 28 spline axles will hold up fine behind a stock engine too unless you're doing 6,500 rpm clutch drops on the line.
