Cats for emmisions ???
Is there a difference in cats that could help pass the f@#!*% inspections?[:@] I dont have cats now, got pulled over, they took my sticker i "bought" and ticketed me, so I need some cats quick but not sure if that alone will pass emissions so I'm looking for any help to pass emmissions. Thanks.
If, after you put the cats back on, you still don't pass, and, if you've got an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, reduce your fuel pressure about 5 psi. THis effectively leans out your mixture. Also, bump your timing back to stock 10. Make sure your engine is well warmed up and the cats are HOT. DON'T turn the engine off right before the emission test.
OK thanks for the advise. I read here once that someone put some fuel additive in the gas tank just before test. It's made to help pass emissions, does anyone know the name of this additive? And is there a difference in brand of cats, I know they reduce emissions, do some "work" better than others? Also, did the 93 LX's come with front and rear cats stock (pre-muffler and after muffler)?

AFAIK, all cats are basicly the same. Some are just referred to as hiflow. They are all made the same way and do the same thing.
The '93 5.0 LX, like the GT, did come with four cats, but they are not as you described. Rather all four are in the "H" pipe, 2 to a side. An after muffler cat would really not work well. Cats have to be as close to the engine as possible as they have to be HOT to work well.
Do you have fuctioning egr and smog pump? If not, then your problems have only begun!
Emission inspection must be a requirement for the Houston area. It's the country's most polluted air city now having passed LA. I used to live in Amarillo & no emission inspection there.
I was online lookig at cats from EBAY and browsed a few photos, maybe I wasn't payin attention and waslookin at a 6 cyl exhaust or something that showed cats like by the tailpipes. The exhaust was as is on the car when I bought it, and have no idea what the stock exhaust looks like. And no, no smog pump either, lookin for that too. **** this is gonna get expensive, new belts, brackets, pump, cats. I should sell the damn thing but I love it too much, my wife is bitchen at me already cause of the ticket for " displaying ficticious sticker". Ya Houston sucks, there are more refineries around spewin more pollution than anything else, but I don't have the money the big corporations do. Guess I could always move, LOL. [:'(]
God i love living in a little town where the mechanics don't give a rats @$$, they don't even bother checkng in my small little MO town, that sucks though, I'd reccomend buying a setup with cats thats already put together, then u can have a quick inspection once they're on, go back once you've passed and put on your old set up. Not ethical but hey, you're not theone who thought up gasoline that pollutes as standardfor cars.
Ya, if I lived about 30 more miles North from where I live now, they don't test emissions, but my town is within Harris county so we fall under the big city rules.[X(]
Do they do a visual test at emission testing or is it just a sniffer test? Here in Williamson County, Tn, it's just sniffer and a visual for the presence of cats for '95 and earlier cars. '96 and later get hooked up to the computer thru the OBD port. That tells 'em if everything is working. So, if it's sniffer only, put some cats on it and see if it'll pass, but, like I said before, make sure your car is well warmed up and the cats are HOT. If you still don't pass, put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on it with a guage. Your pressure should be around 39 psi for normal. If you want to lean out the mixture to reduce unburned hydrocarbons, reduce the fuel pressure down to about 34. If you've got your timing advanced more than the factory 10, reset it back to 10, then try it again. If they do a visual for egr and smog, then you gotta find all that stuff, get it installed and then try again.
When I bought my '93, I made sure the egr and smog systems were in place and working. I wouldn't even consider buying a car without. The car did not have cats on it. I had those installed. Still flunked. Reduced fuel pressure and retarded timing and it passed just fine.
Good luck with it. For those considering removing emission stuff. This inspection stuff is only gonna get wider spread and tougher.

Thats because the amount of OBDI cars still driving around today is shrinking.
