Well, the 289 and the 302 are the same motor, pretty much. Any 302 is just a bored out 289, they are all on the same block. Do you know what year the motor is? Look all over the engine to see if you can find any numbers at all and then post them on here and maybe we can help you out a little bit more.

I'll look on the internet to see what numbers those are for, it almost sounds like a 302... Oh another thing I forgot to add and something to re-ask you, do you know what vehicle it came out of? What year the engine might be? If it is a small block v8 it could also be a 260.

actually the bores of the 289 and 302 are both 4" its just the 289 has a shorter stroke. thats why they revved so high back in the day when they used them for road or rally racing.

anyhow, good luck.

lol, good switch from import to domestic. Well there are different versions of these engines. The small block ford, when it began gaining popularity in the mustang, slowly went up from the 260 to 289 to the 302. As I was saying there are different types of these engines, there was the boss 302 which was putting out around 320 horse power to the 302 HO which we find in the fox bodied mustangs which puts out between 190-225 hp. These engines were put in anything from cars to trucks and they all have various HP ratings. But if you do have a 289 or a 302 that is not a high performance engine such as the boss or the HO it's probably pushin around 200 hp. Does the engine run or do you know. As for the numbers that you got off the water pump, all that you found is ford's casting number for the water pump lol, take a good look at the engine tomorrow and look all around the block. Get it cleaned up and see what numbers you can find on the actual engine block and you can go from there. If anyone else wants to help explain some of this stuff please do!

your cast numbers so far read
d9ze

d= 1970's
9= the 9 year of the 70;s
z= ford mustang
e= engin componet

so far you got a 1979 302 .if the numbers off the block are the same that is what it is .
