mysterious engine backfire!
HI,

I AM A NEW MEMBER,JUST JOINED 10-24-03, I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY '93LX.

AFTER THE CAR RUNS (NORMAL DRIVING) FOR AN HOUR,I GET THIS FEELING, WHEN I GIVE IT GAS TO CLIMB TO 4000 RPM, THAT THE ENGINE IS NOT RESPONDING SOLIDLY. LIKE ITS CHOKING FOR AIR,THEN IT BACKFIRES THRU THE MASS AIR SYSTEM. I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW,ONLY MODS. MADE ARE THE USUAL,SHORTY HEADERS,MASS AIR(75MM,65MM THROTTLE BODY),PULLEYS,LARGE CAP.COOLING SYSTEM ETC,ETC, TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM,WHICH IS INTERMITTENT,I'PUT A NEW STOCK DISTRIBUTOR IN,NEW COIL,NEW OXYGEN SENSORS,(I'M RUNNING 3" DIA. S/STEEL SIDE EXIT EXHAUSTS),NEW EGR VALVE ,NEW PCV VALVE,SINCE MAKING THOSE CHANGES,I'VE NOTICED SOME IMPROVEMENT,BUT IT STILL DOES IT. WHEN ITS NOT DOING IT,THAT 5.0 CLIMBS HARD & FAST,BUT WHEN THAT MYSTERY RETURNS,I GET DEPRESSED. CAR HAS 51,000 ORIG. MILES,ITS TOO YOUNG TO DIE, HELP!!!!

I had some of the same symptoms, it was a bad EGR valvethat needed to be replaced. My car felt like it was lunging forward a bit when I accelerated, then after about 3500 it would pull fine. Nevertheless, run the computer through a diagnostic and get the trouble codes. However, my car has over 100k more than your car, so I dont know exactly why it would be the EGR valve. Either way, get the trouble codes, that's your best bet. Hope I helped a little.

It may be a spark plug breaking down or a plug wire that is in need of replaceing. Mass air meter- try your stock one on it. a valve could be also sticking. like they said before it could also be a vacuum leak around the intake or some of the hoses.
