Altering you cam timing will not free up much HP. It just moves the power band to a diff RPM range.

What you want to do is advance your initial ignition timing. You could probably set it at about 12 deg adv. Just drive it and floor the throttle and let the RPM's get to the red line and if you have no Pinging you can go a little more adv. If it pings you can either run higher octane gas or retard the timing some. Only advance it in increments of 2 deg at a time.

well ones have to get a timing light [to do it accurate] then ones need to get a 1/2 wrench. then ones need to hook up timing light to battery and the lead to the number one plug wire. then ones need to remove the spout connector then one needs to start car up and aim light at the balance while lossing up the hold down nut and then tighten it up when its at 14 or so.

that is how ones does advancing the timing

now for a real description do a search

I think he is refering to timing the cam...not the distributor.

I don't know the exact details, but what you need to do is first get a cam timing measuring device, and take your timing chain off. Then you rotate your cam according to the cam timing measuring device and reinstall the timing chain.

This will give you some horses only if you set the timing to optimum according to your mods. What that is I don't know.

Hope that helps some....

i havent had an valve cover off of an ford 302 (lots of other cars not a ford yet) but alot of times there will be like say 3 differnt holes drilled in the gear with numbers stamped on them like 1 then 2 then three, then if you put #2 on the dowel pin then you line up the shinney link with the tooth on the top of the gear marked 2 and so on and so on, if your motor dident come with an degreed sproket like that they are probably avalibal aftermarket. it dosent add much hp mostly just shifts your powerband to a differnt place in the rpm range

It sounds to me like he talking about the initial timing not cam timing, there is no way you could set up a cam with 14 degrees, the car would not run.
