550hp 408w 1999 6 Banger
Can Someone tell me what kind of flow rates on the heads to make aprox 550 hp 500+ftlbs on a 408w and if this would be too much for an 1988 block? Also What K member would i use 94-95 GT or can i use stock? Will it be possable for $4000?
Thank you
Alan

you will need BIG heads. Trick flow high port's and probly some work done to them.
A 1988 351w BLOCK should be fine, but the stock internal's i wouldent trust at that level.
unsure on the K member.
"possible" for $4000? i doubt it, you gonna run 500hp through a T5 tran's and stock rear end? It might be "possible" but its not "smart" to only have $4k and think you will get this car together right.
for example. im planing a mild 351w for my convertible in about a year and a half, and im budgeting $10k. but it more then likey will be around $15k when everything is said and done.
Might sound like alot, but im going to do it "right" the first time.
good luck.

$4000 is pretty ambitious for a 408 Windsor build.
My 408 Windsor should be in the 550 HP area and I have about $4000 just in the engine after buying the rotating assembly, new carb (I don't think you 750 is enough, I bought a Holley 830 HP) Having machine work done etc... Its the "little stuff" that you don't think of that raises your cost. I put on a 7 quart oil pan, stud girdle for the lower end, rocker arm stud girdle, etc... the list goes on and on. My tranny is being built to handle 600 HP with a transbrake. I already had a Auburn locker with 4:10's in the car. I am doing a lot of stuff that wasn't necessary but I wanted, transbrake, line lock, gauges, fuel cell, battery relocation to the trunk, tubular K member, manual quick ratio rack etc..
My weak point is still the heads, I have ported and polished Windsor Senior heads but will probably be switching to AFR 205's when I paint it over the winter, depends on how the tuning goes when the cars done.
Keep an open mind and know that you may blow the budget!
Don't ever mention to your wife how much you have spent!!! (reason why I am waiting for the AFR's

I have roughly 15k into my 408w, mine's fuel injected, but really that only adds about 3kish to the total. You'll never, ever do it for 4k, unless you do some odd-ball junkyard quad turbo somethin or other. Start savin your pennies

you need to revise your combo, for a 408, I'd use at least a 205-225 cc head or look into getting a set of tfs high port heads and a single plane intake and custom cam, do all that and have Biggs performance or Pro systems design you a carb, continue with your current combo and you'll be disappointed at output
