Default check engine light question

My check enginge light comes on for a few seconds then goes off. It does this under any driving conditions and seems very inconsistant as to how long it stays on and when it comes on. Do I need a special computer to pull the codes or can it be done with a Volt Meter andhow do I do that? Anyone got any suggestions I would like to hear them.

The codes can be pulled without a scanner. You actually don't even need a volt meter you can do it through the check engine light. All you will need is a small piece of wire and a pen and pad to write down the codes.

Heres a link with a pretty good step by step guide for running the KOEO, KOER, and Cylindar Balance tests:

This is a link to a list of code descriptions:

Good Luck!
