Yep, I would start with the EGR and Balancer before choking the engine with Seafoam.

I can run 12* on 89 octane with no problems.

Probably the EGR effectively causing a vacuum leak and leaning you out.

My bet is on the EGR definatly if its throwing that code. Solve that code before you do anything else that would possibly waste money. My car when fuel injected would be fine on 89 with 14* timing.

That will only be noticable at idle. It's more that it's not working then being stuck open.

choke the engine?? .........if anything he'll be cleaning up the inside of the chambers and on tops of the pistons, FYI I run 87 in my 92 with stock heads and pistons and run 13-14 initial base and total of whatever a stock 85 dizzy gives, and no EGR and never once a ping

ok well i did clean out my egr and checked the pcv valve the other day. but ever since it had idled poorly, died out a few times, and kinda jerks back n forth at idle...ill swap egr's and see what happens. if not ill run the seafoam as well.

IF the OP means by getting on it that he is at full throttle and hears it ping, the prob is most likely not egr even though it is throwing a code, thinks about it guys......when is egr present/working?? no egr flow should be present during WOT,warm up or idle, EGR is present during cruise/light acceleration and mid range acceleration, so if the prob is happening during wot, when cylinder pressures are greatest and elevated, then I stand by my diagnosis of carbon build up in the chambers as this will elevate combustion chamber temps and coupled by the already elevated cylinder pressures at WOT , we now have a recipe for detonation/pinging, WHAT we need now is the op TO define a little better what "getting on it" means??? If now however the OP experiences pinging at light accel or moderate accell, then I support EGR issue

ok guys i ran some seafoam, and it didnt ping as much at all. i even set timing almost to 20 degrees before it actually pinged as much and on 89 octane gas. i set it down to 14, 12, and now back to 10. and at each setting the car doesnt ping at 3/4 or full throttle anymore, but theres a lil bit of pinging each time right around 45-55mph in overdrive, regardless of timing at 10, 12, or 14. i ran about 1/3 bottle of seafoam through vac line, should i run some more?

i also changed egr, and it feels much better now.

still pinging at 10 degrees with 89 octane gas. a lil bit of pinging while driving normally around 25-30 mph, then in overdrive around 45-55 mph. it will ping a lil bit while accelerating and then go away. just usually at those specific speeds. what can i do?
