Default Did i make a mistake?

So the other day coming home from college i noticed my car wouldn't heat up at all, stayed at the C the entire 60 mile trip back home. I popped open the T-stat housing and found a broken thermostat in the open position. Talk about luck considering my drive home is 45 of the 60 miles down 539 in the cell phone free zone of the NJ Pine Barrens. I originally had installed a Mr Gasket 195 high flow/balanced thermostat with an Aluminum Radiator and an EMP stewart stage 1 water pump. The store didn't have a Mr gasket high flow/balanced 195 only a 180. I purchased the 180 because i needed to get back to school for a class at 6pm. I notice the car warmed up this time, but still ran cool needle never passed the ( C NORMAL H) O on the gauge. Is there anyway that with my beefed cooling system and a 180 tstat that i wont get out of open loop? and ill endure the consequences?

I run a Mr Gasket 180 also and in the winter I have to put cardboard in front of the radiator cuz it runs too cold as well. I have an aluminum radiator as well.

If you have a stock unmoleted computer, there's a good chance that you'll never get out of open loop cold enrichment mode. How's your gas mileage?

I only drive to school and home, 65mph straight shot. When i get home maybe 2 short trips around town to pick up stuff for school. When Im on campus i don't drive it anywhere just sits in the parking lot. My gas mileage was 21mpg on this tank, with the needle going down 1/4 tank on the trip home alone. I filled up as soon as i left my house today, and even though i don't have an mpg reading i can say that the needle only moved maybe 1/8 a tank on the trip back to school. I also noticed that my idle came down. During the trip home i noticed an idle of 950-1000rpms, where as this trip back i noticed my idle was around 750-800rpms.

i normally average 24mpg with this new driving style. So when i filled up and saw that i only got 21mpg thats what made me think about "not getting out of open loop" causing the MPG drop. But then after realizing i now have a 180 it made me think oh sh*t will i still have this problem?

thats really high mileage for a performance based v8. you sure you're doing the calculations correct? dont base MPG off tank size. Fill the tank until the pump shuts off, don't top off. Reset trip meter. Go drive. Fill again. Divide mileage / gallons.

yup exactly what you said is how ive done all my MPG readings for everycar since ive been driving. Im glad to see that someone else does it off when the pump stops and not the top off, thought i was the only one. I drive my car pretty easy, shift at 2,500, barely ever go past 65mph on the highway, i drive it this way as much as i can to make my tank last the longest. Plus i need the car to last me the rest of this year plus next year till i graduate. once that happens ill retire her to the pole barn and buy a new one.
