Default Stalling Out Problem

My girlfriend just recently bought a 1989 Mustang GT and it runs really well, except the car is having a stalling out issue. The problem is becoming more and more frequent it seems.

Ever since we bought the car... which was about 2 months ago... we had battery and alternator problems. Well now there is a brand new battery and alternator in the car. But the alternator still jumps around all over the place while driving. I don't remember my other mustangs of this body style doing that???

The car only seems to stall when coming to a more rapid stop or sometimes can just be putting car in reverse or drive starting out slowly, or just turning into parking spots slowly. It will die... steering wheel locks up... but the car will start right back up like nothing is wrong every time. Never any issues at all with the car not starting back up immediately. I am at a loss as of what the problem might be. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

I would look at the TFI module as thats a common problem with these Mustangs when it comes to random stalls.

Now when you say "But the alternator still jumps around all over the place while driving", do you mean that you can hear it bouncing around in your engine bay? (sorry, i couldnt resist) or are you refering to the volt meter reading on the dash?

You could do several easy checks with a DC Volt meter when the vehicle is running to see what type of voltage the alternator is producing as well as completing a voltage drop test on the feed and ground side of the charging system circuit. I would also take alook at the IACV too, making sure its functioning correctly as well as looking to see if your base idle needs adjustment, ect.

I think once you figure out the stalling issue, it will probably fix your volt meter reading.

Hope this helps..
