dies when u left off the gas

ok so i got the drive the stang today runs pretty good but every time u left off the gas it dies just like u shut the key off but it will start right up

mjr46 12-30-2009 05:25 PM

in this cold weather, did you adjust the choke on the carb???

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 05:28 PM

dont have a choke it was at op temp if that means anything

mjr46 12-30-2009 05:38 PM

when did all this occur??

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 06:23 PM

this is the first time i have drove it so i guess today lol

PRO50SC 12-30-2009 08:21 PM

so after the restart, will it stay running or does it start/stall/start/stall.

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 08:22 PM

it will stay runnin untill u drive it and u let off the gas to brake or change gears

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 08:23 PM

the car idles fine it only dose it when u drive it

PRO50SC 12-30-2009 08:31 PM

OK so is there like a dash pot or something to adjust. Most carbs have something to stop the stall when it returns to idle. What's the base idle set at. Any vacuum leaks

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 08:34 PM

800 rpm no vac leaks all new vac lines

mjr46 12-30-2009 09:26 PM

is the float level set properly?? fp set accordingly??

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 09:28 PM

i dont know who to set the float level on a ederbrock carb fp is a 5 psi

mjr46 12-30-2009 09:45 PM

you have to remove the top of the carb to set the level, anyway I doubt that is the issue, make sure fuel volume is adequate

1988TTOP 12-30-2009 09:48 PM

ok will do

1988TTOP 12-31-2009 02:42 PM

ok i got it to run right but when i shut it off it wouldnt start again i slowly cranks like the battery is dead i check the battery it has 13 volts and did a load test on it and it passed i check all the grounds and and connections

mjr46 12-31-2009 03:06 PM

if it cranks slow and battery passed a load test, then you have voltage drop occuring somewhere, using a dvom, you need to check for voltage drop at every load transition point/ connection, right down to the starter itself, the case on the start grounds against the bellhousing

1988TTOP 12-31-2009 03:11 PM

ok i have no idea how to do that thanks mjr

1988TTOP 12-31-2009 05:11 PM

this car pisses me off i am bout to sell the damn thing it will start when its on the battery charger

mjr46 12-31-2009 08:09 PM

that's because electrical systems in a car to function properly, they need 12.6 v and or above, below that and funky stuff happens, you need to find the bad connection or the voltage drop point in the system. google voltage drop tests

What did you use to do the load test?

1988TTOP 01-02-2010 08:09 PM

it was this
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...andName=Actron

thats mjr for the links would a bad starter relay do this cause i went to check my connections and the one that gose to the starter just fell off

PRO50SC 01-02-2010 09:07 PM

Is your battery a sealed unit or does it have caps to access the cells? You can pass a load test, but still have a dead cell.

1988TTOP 01-02-2010 09:18 PM

its sealed i replaced the starter relay its still donin the samething but i did notice that the cable that goes from the relay to the starter gets relay hot when u try to crank it

mjr46 01-02-2010 09:49 PM

you either have high resistance in the cable or a faulty connection between there and the starter

1988TTOP 01-02-2010 09:59 PM

well my connections look good so the cable?????

mjr46 01-02-2010 10:19 PM

you cannot and I repeat CANNOT assume a connections integrity is good based on looks.............performing a resistance check or voltage drop test across a connection is the only way to verify such, or if such tests are above your ability, replace the cable and cross your fingers, remember it could be an issue in the starter also causeing the excessive current draw , causing wire to heat up.....which is why I always verify through tests:)

1988TTOP 01-02-2010 10:23 PM

well i know it dont matter but the starter is 2 days old im not very good with electrical ****

mjr46 01-02-2010 10:24 PM

replace the cable then and see what happens, but make sure all grounds are in good shape

1988TTOP 01-02-2010 10:26 PM

ok i will try it on sunday

that could be whats been killing all your starters:icon_shrug:

I usually ask what was the last thing you did to it? Has it had a tune up such as plugs, wires, etc. I see it is a manual transmission and not an automatic. Good luck!

:icon_confused:...read the entire thread , he is past the original issue, and is now working with a excessive current draw/cable issue................

1988TTOP 01-03-2010 10:19 AM

i am bout to sell this damn car

1988TTOP 01-03-2010 10:42 AM

come to think about it i never had this problem untill i got this starter with it acting like the battery is dead and the more i think about it the starter sounds weird after the motor fires up like it stay engauged for a couple of secs only dose it some times like i would say for every 5 times u start it it will do it once

mjr46 01-03-2010 04:49 PM

try a different starter then:)

1988TTOP 01-03-2010 04:59 PM

will do on tuesday when i get off work

1988TTOP 01-03-2010 08:05 PM

ok so i took the starter off and hooked it up to jumper cables and a battery and it dont do **** if u take the cover off and push the piece that engages that stater it will spin

1988TTOP 01-05-2010 07:35 PM

well replaced the cable and the starter still dose it i also cleaned all my grounds

Ok, maybe im super tired but to get the starter to work, you need to have the ignition switch wire going to the S terminal of the solenoid to activate the starter, OR, like i said before, maybe im too tired and completely read that wrong.

Do you have a volt meter that you can hook up to the battery and have a friend crank the engine to see how low the voltage drops?

I would definately do what mjr46 said, do a voltage drop test on the feed and ground side of the starter circuit :)

BTW, how are your fuses?
