Default crankshaft problems

I pulled my motor few weeks ago and decided to change out the rear main seal since it was apart.. so I pull off some of the main caps and notice grooves in one of the bearings.. being this the first ford I have worked on and not knowing if they had v groove bearings I pulled another main cap to find out that they are not. So now I'm changing out the bearing and I'm gonna need to get my crankshaft turned... but, I had my stepdad look at it and he said that he wasn't sure if they would be able to turn the crankshaft. The only way I would be able to tell is if I took it to are local shop that does all that kind of work.

I've thought of serveral different ideas and checked places for a different shaft as well. so now I have mine that I could just get turned, buy the oversized bearings and put it back in. total of about 100 bucks, or there is that kit from autozone.. I talked to my buddy up there and he says that I'd have to get that balanced as well. Then he said he has an SVO Crank out of his old 302 that has 4000 miles on it. I then talked to my stepdad about that and he said that I'll have to get that crank polished and turned AND balanced which will cost me more then what I would pay to fix mine or buy the remanufactured one. My buddy mike at autozone calms that I won't have to balance or do anything to HIS crank BUT I'll have to get the manufactured one balanced...

I'm completey confused on what to do with this crank.

oh he said he wants under 100 for his.. so I am guessing about 70-90 bucks for his svo crank.

sooo...

keep mine..turned, and bearings - about $100
buy remanufactured - about $ 150, turning in core w/ balance if needed, about $220
buy friends, $80 ... then balanced $140..turned and polished if needed... about $250..

I'm thinking of just getting mine turned and buying the bearings...

what do you guys think ?

Just take your crank to the machine shop and have them inspect it. They will have to crack test it too. If the cranks no good they will let you know, and if it's any good they will turn it. Also, unless you've got the rods and pistons out don't bother balancing the crank, cuz you need the balance the rods with the crank. And for the guy who said you would need to get it polished, that's all part of machining the crank

^^^ I agree use your crank. You are better off getting it checked out and polished/turned, than you are buying some mass remanufactered junk from Autozone, or a carnk that you don't know the history of, your buddy may have good intentions but you don't know if it was ever dropped or knocked over. Better safe than sorry I say.
