Default speedo problem

Here goes. I did a search and didn't find any real clear answers or anything specific to the problem that I have. I have a 91 5.0 w/T5. It has been regeared with 3.73's. The speedometer was bouncing when I got it, so I ordered a new 23 tooth gear to replace the one that was in the tranny. When I pulled the old one there were no teeth on it at all hardly. I counted and there were 23 teeth on the old one. Replaced the old one and the speedo worked a little better for about 2 days the speedo wouldn't bounce after 20 mph. It started again though. So I got under the dash and made sure that the cable was all the way in the back of the speedo. Messed around with it for a while and now it is even worse than ever. It bounces wildly from 20-140. Also, can anyone tell me if the speedo cable should go just above the clutch quadrant or above and to the left of it. It looks like it is in sort of a bind now. It comes out of the cluster curves left, curves right, then goes through the firewall. It just seems like there are too many curves right off the cluster. So here is the question. Is it the cable, speed sensor for the Cruise, or the output shaft gear in the tranny. Thanks for the help.</P>

Default speedo problem

The wild speed fluctuations sound like a cable dragging against the housing. I had a bouncy speedo on a 5spd ranger. The cable went to a gear reduction unit on the side of the trans. It had a loose collar on it and the unit wassagging and causing the cable to drag. You could also lube the cable with graphite lock lube. You will have to pull it and rub the lube on the whole cable. I think too much friction from a draging cable could have cost some gear teeth. It might happen again if the cable is dragging
