Default What could be wrong?

I'm looking at buying a 5.0 and the guy said it shuts off after 5-10 minutes of driving it. What could be wrong? He said he so far replaced the ecu, coil, distributor, new clutch and checked the starter. Any thoughts?

I don't want to buy into it if this could be a major thing.

Man that would be awesome if it was only that. Is there any way to check to see if it's the fuel pump or if the engine is bad?

I know compression checks would say a lot but I doubt he will let me do that in his driveway.

A worn engine just isn't going to shut off in that amount of time. Neither will a clogged fuel filter. Although to check that get a fuel pressure tester. It sounds like the TFI module needs to be replaced. A common problem. They get hot and the car shuts off. When it cools down the car can be started again. You said he replaced the dizzy but my question is was it a full dizzy or just the main part. Sounds like the guy has no clue what he is doing though lol

That was my thought too. I figured a worn engine would be constant not sporadic.

For the distributor it says new coil and MSD distributor.

What's TFI stand for? I'm used to Mod motor terms hahaha.

If I got a fuel pressure tester where and how do I test it? I've never done one of those before, but I have done compression tests so I should have no problem doing it.

HAHA, I agree I think he's probably clueless...if so that will be a win/win for me

Like mentioned before, it sounds like a TFI problem or in other words you ignition control module, they go bad when exposed to heat. Remove the module and get it tested at a part store.

Even if it tests good at the autostore it may still be bad because it's cool when being tested, it's when it heats up that all hell breaks loose..This is the problem I have with my LT1 F-body the ICM was bad, but tested good at the store because it was cool.

you can get a new ignition module at autozone for around $45 with a lifetime warranty and just return it if that's not the problem,,or you could go to a junkyard and get a bunch of them and pay like $5-$10

That is why you have them test the module several times before they can confirm it is not good.

Awesome thanks for the info guys. I'm going to buy one and bring it there to try it out.

Where is it located and how hard is it to remove/change?

It is located underneath the dizzy cap. It is a rectangular shape object. you're going to need a special tool to remove the screws the module.
