Welcome!! 12* to 16* depending where you like it best. increase timing=increase octane. too much time = loose in power mid-range or high rpms (can't remember), block will heat up above norm, pinging will start.

move timing in 2* increments. base timing is 10*

Just start at stock timing.. 10 degrees. It's easy to bump from there to get more performance until it starts to ping then back one down.. If you start to high initially it could be bad.. 14+ pretty much requires 93 octane in most cases..

As for setting it that's easy.. First disconnect the spout connecter that's along passenger fender, it looks like a little grey plastic tab looking thing. Start the car then check the base timing it has now by using a timing light.. there's little marks on the balancer that will tell you what it's set at.. To adjust it just rotate the distributor (need to loosen it) until it's in sync with the timing light (you know how to use a timing light correct?).. Start at 10 degrees, once it's lined up, tighten the distributor and check the timing didn't change. Plug the spout back in and go for a drive. If you want some more power, do the whole thing over and try 12 degrees, go for a drive.. While in 4th or 5th go WOT at low speeds to lug the motor and listen for any pinging.. If it pings retard it back to 10 degrees or use a higher octane gas..
